about

A never-before released Jimmy LaFave song recorded live at the 2008 Kerrville Folk Festival. Rise Above is a song for Jimmy's good friend Bob Childers who had passed away only weeks before - a song Jimmy said he tried to incorporate lessons learned from Childers.

lyrics

You cannot push a river
‘Cause it moves at its own pace
You cannot walk a road that will not bend
And though I’ve traveled long beside you
Hey, I’m as far right behind
And you must travel on past our journey’s end

So, rise above these earthly plains
Rise above, my friend, ‘cause you have rolled away the stone
Rise above, hey, and hallowed be thy name
Rise above, my friend, you did not die in vain

The waters of the sweet, sweet spring
They’re glistening in the sun
They’re calling to your soul, your soul to be as one
So, do not chase the devil as you may catch him in the end
Trust your faith, turn your cheek, and start to run

And rise above these red dirt plains
Rise above, my sweet friend, ‘cause you’ve rolled away the stone
Rise above, hey, you did not die in vain
Rise above, my friend, and hallowed be thy name

Rise above these earthly plains
Rise above, my friend, you have rolled away the stone
Rise above, hey, you did not die in vain
Rise above, my friend, oh, hallowed be thy name

When the beating of your soft heart fades into the din
This world, you’ve chiseled out, chiseled out your song
We’ll sing three-part harmony to your joyful memory
Life will be good, oh yeah, and we, we, we will carry on

So, rise above these earthly plains
Rise above, my friend, you have rolled away the stone
Rise above, hey, you did not die in vain
Rise above, my friend, oh, hallowed be thy name

Well, rise above these red dirt plains
Rise above, my friend, ‘cause you have rolled away the stone
Rise above, hey, you did not die in vain
Rise above, my friend, and simply fly away
Rise above, my friend, and simply fly away
